2006 Break-through Innovation

     Back in 2005, lanterns were made of highly flammable paper. Although these lanterns sold well in Asia, it posed an interesting problem safety conscious Western markets. Since the ratio between weight, volume and heat was so intricate, making a fire-retardant lantern was no easy chore. The moisture content of fire-proofing compounds added weight which reduced performance. This reduced performance was less noticeable in winter, but was a major factor in summer.

   With persistence we worked with paper mills until we found one who could make a paper thin enough, that was fire-retardant yet maintaining the strength to withstand the required uses for the lantern in the market. Finally we made the 1st fire-retardant lantern in early 2006. This was the biggest innovation this industry has seen in its 1800 year history. Being fire-retardant, Sky lanterns were now suitable to be sold worldwide and became one of the largest growth markets in 2006-2007.

Growing Pains for Sky Lantern Industry

    With this growth came new suppliers, especially from Hunan and Zhejiang. These new producers came into the market with stolen pictures from the internet claiming to be worldwide suppliers. With discounted materials and workers working out of their homes, the savings have helped reduced the costs, leading to sub-standard lanterns entering Western markets.

   As these lanterns entered Western markets, they caused problems for importers and retailers as well. Since Chinese producers are not liable, importers found that the savings they obtained also came with largely increased liability. There have been reports of police in Europe removing sky lanterns from stores by force.

   Likely this industry will soon be regulated to prevent unnecessary danger. Much like the lead paint found on toys in the USA, both substandard producers as well as substandard importers who approved the products are to blame. Increasingly, these new suppliers also offer our packaging by e-mail, pretending to be our factories. We do not deal with Chinese trading companies. If you are offered lanterns with our packaging, simply write us and we will let you know if they are an approved dealer, as we pursue copyright infractions and will have illegal lanterns seized at the port of destination.

    Pioneering marketers have destroyed their discount sub-standard lanterns and switched to our lanterns to avoid liability, we know who the bad producers are. We have been in the industry since 2005 and can advise you concerning producers. Some are legitimate and experienced while others supply samples from other producers and hope to gain experience at the buyers expense. Always ask for customer references and evaluate their production stock. We only guarantee our own lanterns, nonetheless, cold temperatures makes quality less of an issue. Sub-standard lanterns pose less threat in Winter and may not need to be destroyed.

Instructions

Simply light the patch and wait 1 or 2 minutes and release. The lantern will ascend several hundred meters leaving the viewers in awe. A breathtaking sight especially if several are launched at the same time. The lanterns are composed of fire-resistant paper bamboo and thin wire. The fuel patch is made of waxed cloth & grass paper.
